Don’t want to ruin anything but it’s likely to end with him falling into the sea and being presumed dead as he’s shown frozen in an iceberg in The Incredible Hulk. It’s then likely that Nick Fury will find him frozen either in the end credits clip or the introduction of the Avengers movie. He will then be thawed-out and awaken in modern times to unite with the other members of SHEILD.

To prevent a recurrence of the situation, Rogers modified the mask with connecting material to his uniform, an added benefit of which was extending his armor to cover his previously exposed neck. Something the article doesn't mention is that the concept of overlapping scales/plates allows the impact to be spread over a greater surface area thereby lessening the overall force transferred to the wearer of the armor.
